What is the pool circling measure in Morris water maze?

Definition: Pool circling measures all complete loops that enclose the pool-center. (Doubling-back does not affect the number of circlings and can be seen in the quads list.)

Pool circling is a useful indication of search strategy.  A subject may learn that the target platform location is a certain distance from the pool edge and then circle the pool at that distance in order to find it, resulting in reducing latencies without knowledge of the actual spatial location.
